Veracruz, Mexico

After two relaxing days at sea, we arrived in Veracruz, Mexico.

Veracruz is lovingly known as "La Puerta de Mexico al Mundo" (the Door from Mexico to the World). The name of both the city and the state in which it resides, Veracruz is strong in maritime history as the oldest and largest seaport in Mexico. The city of nearly half a million people is a diverse, thriving metropolis alive with Afro-Caribbean-Latin charisma. Discovered by Conquistador Hernan Cortes, it was the first Spanish settlement in the Americas. Spain would later begin their conquest of the Aztecs and Mayans, stretching their empire from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean while sending millions in gold back to Europe. Veracruz is the home to the amazing pentagon-shaped Fort San Felipe, ten remarkable coral reefs, charming architecture, plazas and restaurants, as well as the largest aquarium in Latin America.

As we left Veracruz, the pier was lined with several thousand locals to give us a royal sendoff. There were even people all the way out on the breakwater. Unfortunately, we were already seated for dinner and did not get any photos. It was a sight to remember! Thank you Veracruz!
