Mazatlan is Mexico's principal Pacific coast fishing, shrimping and commercial port, as well as
one of its prime Pacific resorts. Mazatlan is famous for its beaches and sport fishing with over
7000 marlin and billfish tagged and released each year. The name Mazatlan comes from the Nahuati
word meaning "place of deer" and refers to large herds of deer that migrated along the coast. Once
home of the ancient Totorame civilization, Mazatlan was later frequented by pirates, who, according
to legend, buried their treasures in the caves and coves near Mazatlan. Although the town itself was
founded by the Spanish, Mazatlan was left to a group of enterprising Germans to develop as a port so
they could import agricultural equipment to Mexico. Mazatlan is divided into two areas: Old Mazatlan
and the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone). In the older section there is the cathedral, zocalo and local
market; and in the Golden Zone are the luxury hotels, shops and beaches. Surrounding islands and the
nearness of the Sierra Madre mountains and communities such as Copala and Cocordia provide great
opportunities for seeing the real Mexico beyond the resorts and tourist areas.
