HAWAII 2009

The Holland America Story

In 1871, Holland America Line began its history as the Nederlandsche-Amerikaansche Stoomvaaart Maatschappij. Because it was headquartered in Rotterdam and provided service to the Americas, it became known as Holland America Line. The line was a principal carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, transporting 850,000 people to new lives in the New World. In 1895 the company offered its first vacation cruise from New York, and in 1910, its first leisure cruise from New York to the Holy Land. In the 1970s, Holland America Line suspended its transatlantic service and sold its cargo shipping division. In 1989 Holland America Line became a wholly owned subdivision of Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise company in the world. Carnival Corporation also owns Carnival Cruise Line, Seabourn, Princess, Costa Cruises, and the super-premium luxury Cunard Line, which built the world's largest ocean liner, the 150,000 ton Queen Mary 2 .

How about a few Hawaiian words...

Aloha - hello, goodbye, love, used in greeting
Mahalo - thank you
Maika'I - good
Malama Pono - take care
Komo Mai - welcome
Nani - beautiful
Hau'oli - happy, joyful

It's time to say Good-Bye

It is always hard to say Good-Bye to all of the new friends and acquaintances you make on a cruise. During our 15-day cruise we travelled a total of 5134 nautical miles or 5904 statute miles. We averaged 19.1 knots/hour, burning 85 gallons of fuel/mile.

That's All Folks!
Aloha!
